About us

We have transformed the Hotel Granetal, which had been vacant for almost 20 years, into an ecological gem, the GRANETAL QUARTIER, on ground steeped in history.

Hospitality for over 100 years

The first Hotel Granetal was built in 1907 and run by Georg Bornemann. In 1957 it was demolished, rebuilt and continued by his son Phillipp Bornemann. Only 25 years later another complete demolition took place and the house in its present form was built. This was operated by Treff Hotel AG until 2002. After the Harz Mountains became increasingly unattractive for tourists, our beloved house then fell into a long winter sleep.

History revived

Quite neglected, overgrown and with traces of vandalism, we discovered the house in early 2018. Over three years, we renovated it with heart and hand, so that it now shines again in full glory and can continue the long history.

Ecological restoration in harmony with nature was our priority. What was worth preserving was to be preserved and upgraded in a contemporary way.

Our philosophy

Step by step to a CO2-neutral vacation

Fresh mountain air, tranquility and nature on the doorstep – since the end of the 19th century, Hahnenklee has attracted recreation seekers as a health resort. Even though the place has changed over time, the unique surroundings of the Upper Harz have remained unchanged to this day. Here you can feel the power of nature, when the wind rustles through the trees, you dive into crystal-clear water of the forest pool or in autumn the fog moves through the valley.

The preservation of this wonderful area and a responsible approach to nature have therefore been of great concern to us from the very beginning.

This is what responsible use of resources looks like to us:

  • Use of sustainable building materials during the renovation: Throughout the house, the walls were painted with ecological clay and silicate paint. We used chalk paint to refurbish existing pieces of furniture. The larch wood planks in the apartments were laid without glue and for the balcony cladding we used linseed oil as wood preservative.
  • Supply with green electricity through our own photovoltaic system. This enables us, for example, to clean and dry our laundry in a CO2-neutral manner.
  • Nature-oriented outdoor facilities: We have created a wildflower meadow and a bird hedge and selected native plants for the planting of the beds and balcony boxes. We are also planning a forest garden, a barefoot path and an insect hotel.
  • Low water and energy consumption due to economical fixtures and use of LED lights throughout the house.
  • Waste separation also in the individual apartments
  • Use of biodegradable cleaning agents and recycled toilet paper
  • We had our flyers, business cards and other print products printed by the ecological print shop Printzipia (more information at www.printzipia.de).
  • Most of the food and beverages offered in the hotel are certified organic or produced by regional producers and thus environmentally friendly. Herbs and fruit will grow in our own edible garden for our guests in the future.
Look ahead

Already a lot achieved on the way to a sustainable vacation offer

But we want even more! Our goal is climate neutrality. In the coming year, we would like to have our carbon footprint calculated and aim for certification as a climate-neutral aparthotel. We also want to install a charging station for electric vehicles by the end of 2022 at the latest.
